Commentary

Below are a couple of the many editorials or other commentaries regarding wolverines and their conservation from across their global range published within the last few years.

Title: Recent wolverine news highlights how thirty-plus years is a long time…
Publication: Carnivore Conservation Compendium
Date: January 21, 2026

Summary:

This is an abridged and updated version of a commentary Tom Skeele, founder of the Carnivore Conservation Compendium, wrote in December 2023. The reminder it provides is still pertinent today, especially given the recent news that “a coalition of wildlife advocates filed a complaint in the Federal District Court for the District of Montana against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for failing to designate critical habitat for wolverine, listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in November of 2023”. This commentary focuses on the sad truth that “good change” in carnivore conservation is typically a long time in the making.

Title: Let’s give the wary wolverine some space
Publication: Mongabay
Date: January 12, 2024

Summary:

Wolverines are extremely solitary animals that purposefully avoid humans, so seeing one in the wild is typically a once-in-a-lifetime encounter. This makes planning for their conservation very tricky. “Three ways we can best support wolverines into the future are to connect large areas of habitat, close seasonal use areas to create disturbance-free zones, and actively manage their populations,” a new op-ed states.
